  • Latest update on proposed opening for schools

    Tue 26 May 2020
    Dear parents,

As promised, I wanted to give you an update on the proposed opening up of schools to other year groups beginning from June the 1st. Although a decision has still yet to be made by the Government on this, I am expecting there will be a decision on May the 28th by the Prime Minister, depending on certain controlling factors. I am working on the assumption that the Government will ask some schools to begin to phase in certain Year groups. With that in mind I wanted to give you an update on the latest advice from the Local Education Authority. I have received recent communication that Derbyshire County Council have said that:

"Throughout the period of lockdown, Derbyshire County Council (DCC) has remained in intensive discussion with a range of partners, including the Department for Education (DfE). DfE has published in excess of 150 guidance documents relating to education and wider children’s services and therefore it is inevitable that there may occur some ambiguity and contradictions in such a large number of documents. We know you have done an amazing job to try and stay on top of all of them.
We have continued to clarify some key questions that you have raised, especially about the 2m social distancing issue and whether schools can use a rota system as part of their plans. Yesterday, DCC was able to confirm with the DfE that:

    • the 2m social distancing issue within classrooms is essential and schools should not plan their classroom capacity to be based on anything less than 2m social distancing.
    • rota systems are not advised since the scientific evidence is not yet secure that they are safe to use."

I have also included communication from Councillor Alex Dale, who clarifies DCC's position-

Statement from Councillor Alex Dale, Cabinet Member for Young people at Derbyshire County Council – 22 May 2020

“We support the Government in its ambition to see schools opened up to more pupils as soon as it is sufficiently safe to do. To do this we’ve been working flat out to support schools in interpreting the guidance and planning to admit the target year groups announced by the Prime Minister on 10 May.
“This is an incredibly complicated issue to work through. Unfortunately, the guidance so far issued by the Department for Education has not always been entirely consistent or clear on some key aspects and this has created some issues for schools and the council.
“Due to the challenges that we’re having to work through with schools, it is clear now that many primary schools in Derbyshire will not be able to admit the additional year groups (reception, year one and year six) that the Government had envisaged by 1 June. This is because the latest advice from the Government is that children need to be 2m apart in classrooms, and that it is not safe to rota children through the week and more time is needed to work through these issues.
“The Department for Education have been absolutely clear with us that the priority remains the children of key workers and those who are vulnerable. In turn we’ve made clear to all schools that from 1 June their first priority should be aiming to increase the number of children from these groups.
“Then we have advised that they should also continue to plan for how they might accommodate children from the other key year groups (reception, year one, year six, year 10 and year 12).
“Every school in Derbyshire is different and their approaches to offering more places back in classrooms for our children and young people will vary.
“If schools do admit children on 1 June from the key year groups they will need to make sure they have the room to do this safely.
“We hope that secondary schools will be able to offer some face to face learning for year 10 and year 12 students, due to the greater flexibility they have in terms of space.
“We will continue working with schools to identify when they will be able to admit whole-year groups in the coming weeks, although for many of our schools this will still be challenging.
“I want to thank headteachers, school employees and governors who have worked extremely hard over recent weeks as they plan for 1 June. I’d also like to thank parents and carers in advance for bearing with us and their local schools while we continue to work very hard to deliver on our collective ambition to get more children back to school as soon as possible.”

With this in mind I would like to advise you of the decision in consultation with the Chair of Governors to delay the opening of our school to other year groups to at least Monday the 8th of June. I feel that the contradictory advise in the attempts to keep children 2 metres apart within classrooms creates a wealth of problems.

As you will probably understand this is a frustrating situation for me as your headteacher, as I am looking to work a way to get the children back into school as soon as it is safe. However, at the forefront of my mind has always been the welfare of our children and my staff and I will only open the school up further when the risk is minimised and following Health & Safety advice from Derbyshire County Council and the Department of Education.

Therefore I am proposing from the 1st of June the school will only open to Key Workers children, with a view to the school getting the most up to date advice. I am delaying the school opening up of other year groups until at least the 8th of June, so we can get some clarity on the differing positions of DCC (who have the responsibility for our children's safety) and the Department of Education (who drive policy). In my opinion this will allow us the necessary breathing space to get the correct information and advice and therefore plan to get our children back into school in a calm and safe manner. I hope you will agree with me in not being rushed into making a decision that could be based on contradictory advice. There will still of course be the continuation of online resources the teachers are supplying in aiding education for those pupils at home.

So to summarise, I am currently planning to open up the school to Year Groups- Reception, Year 1 & Year 6 from the 8th of June in a phased return to school (more details on this will follow), as I am hoping by then to get clarity from both County and Government advisers. Hopefully this will give us the necessary time as the situation develops on a way for the children to return to school with the minimum amount of risk possible to all our children and staff.

As previously stated this is an evolving situation and I will be reviewing the situation daily with the Chair of Governors, staff, other headteachers, DCC and the Department of Education. I apologise for the the frequency (and length!) of my e-mails, but I wanted to give you as much up to date information and notice as possible, so you can make contingency measures for work etc.

I am very pleased that there is light at the end of the tunnel and working together we can make sure we get to the end as safely as possible.

    Best wishes,

  • Latest Update with regards to the wider opening of schools for Reception, Year 1 and Year 6 children

    Sat 23 May 2020
    Dear Parents,

As always, I wanted to keep you up to date with the latest advice that has been given to me with regards to the wider opening of schools to pupils other than key workers' children.

Last night I received the latest advice from Derbyshire County Council and I wanted to give you advance notice that the proposed implementation of the wider opening of schools from Year Groups: Reception, Year 1 and Year 6 may well be delayed past the initial proposed date of June the 1st.

This is currently what the situation is looking like at present, however there will be continued consultation between Derbyshire County Council and The Department of Education .

I will hopefully know more early next week, but thought it was important to let you know as soon as possible that there may be a delay in the start date of rolling out the Year groups. Therefore, allowing you to at least plan some contingency with regards to your work, child care etc, if in such a case that a delay is confirmed.

I will strive to get more information over the weekend. Hopefully, by early next week I will be given a clearer picture of the road map in getting all our children back into education safely with the minimum amount of risk.  I will of course continue to endeavour to keep you up to date with the latest information.

I am hoping you enjoy a relaxing bank holiday weekend and have a lovely half term.

    Best Wishes

  • update on current plans for partially opening the school

    Wed 20 May 2020

    Dear Parents,

I thought I would write to give you an update on the planned procedures for opening schools from June 1st.

The Government have initially asked that the school open their doors to Year 6, Year 1, Reception children and the Key workers’ children.

In formulating this plan I have worked with County advisors, Governors, other local Headteachers and staff and I have prioritised the welfare of children and staff as my main concern. We have had to bear in mind current staffing levels and current health & safety advice.

The school will operate in four specific ‘bubbles’ of children who will have certain staff assigned to them.

The school will be open for children in Year 6, Year 1 and Reception from Monday through to Thursdays where the children and staff will operate in their own individual year group ‘bubble’.

The Key workers ‘bubble’ will still be available for qualifying children from Monday though to Friday.

Even though the government guidance says-

“We know that, unlike older children and adults, early years and primary age children cannot be expected to remain 2 metres apart from each other and staff. In deciding to bring more children back to early years and schools, we are taking this into account.”

The school will operate as much as reasonably possible with regards to social distancing regimes which do include socially distancing adults during drop off and pick up. Therefore, after 8:30am on a daily basis the car park will be pedestrianised and we will ask you to line up with your children in the marked bays (2metres apart).

There will be a one way system in place, where parents will drop off children in the car park area and then walk through the playground and out through the passage that exits next to the War Memorial Club. If I could ask that you say goodbye to your child outside the school building and then leave via the one way system mentioned above.

    Timings-

    Drop off timings-

    Key Workers 8:45am

    Year 6 children 9am

    Year 1 children 9:15am

    Reception Children 9:30am

Your child will be greeted by a member of staff and ushered into the school.

    Pick up timings-

    Reception children 2:45 pm

    Year 1 children 3pm

    Year 6 children 3:15pm

    Key Workers Children 3:30pm

Your child will be brought out to meet you.

If you have more than one child attending in more than one ‘bubble’, I would ask that you drop off at the first child’s time and also pick up at the first child’s pick up time.

Contact with school staff will need to be kept at a minimum, therefore if you have any queries please e-mail or phone in.

My reasoning for this is a combination of staffing and health & safety considerations. Fridays will be used by the staff to set work for children who are still at home and this will also give the opportunity for the school to initiate deep cleaning once a week to augment the daily cleaning routines. I have attempted this way rather than a part time morning or afternoon set to hopefully minimise disruption to people’s working regimes.

If your child is eligible to return to school, but you have decided not to take up the offer could you please e-mail Miss Newman at kat.newman@buxworth.derbyshire.sch.uk  This will help us with numbers and to organise supervision.

I would ask that you only send your child in with a coat and a drinks bottle. They may of course bring in a packed lunch if they are not having school dinners. Please do not send in book bags.

As you will remember from the previous e-mail the Government guidance states that if you have children in other year groups (2,3,4 & 5), they are still to remain at home for the time being, even if they are a sibling of a child attending school.

With regards to the children who are remaining at home, the staff will continue to set work on the school website.

All procedures will be reviewed on a weekly basis as the situation evolves and there will obviously be other measures I will make you aware of.

This is the current plan, but we are still waiting to hear from the Prime Minister whether the schools are to be reopened or not. We should have confirmation over the coming days, at the daily Coronavirus Government Briefing and if this is the case I will initiate the aforementioned plan.

As you will probably imagine this is a fluid process and unprecedented situation and I appreciate your support in implementing the plan.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

    Best Wishes

  • Latest update with regards to phased return of children

    Tue 12 May 2020

    Dear Parents,

As you are no doubt aware after the Prime Minister's announcement on Sunday, if all proceeds well, the Government are planning to open up schools for children in Reception, Year 1 and Year 6 in certain settings from June the 1st, 2020.

I am currently working with the Governing Body, other headteachers and staff in initialising a risk assessment and a feasible plan to make this happen safely at Buxworth School.

Below is the link to the latest Government advice.

Therefore there will be a detailed plan for this phased return to be implemented. This will of course be shared with you as parents, in order to get our children back into school in a safe and calm manner.

This phased return will be implemented from no earlier than 01/06/2020 and will dependent on the country hitting certain criteria set by the Government. However, once this plan has been enacted and a phased return has been implemented, we will be welcoming the children in those particular Year Groups (Reception, Year 1 & Year 6) back to school in some format or another. What this format looks like in reality (timings and locations of drop offs and pick ups, structure of the school day etc) will be released later to you after advice has been taken and health & safety consultation has occurred. A point to note is once the phased return has been implemented and if your child is in Reception, Year 1 or Year 6 and if your child is unable to attend school for whatever reason; the Government advice states that-

"Families should notify their nursery/school/college as normal if their child is unable to attend so that staff can explore the reason with them and address barriers together. Parents will not be fined for non-attendance at this time, and schools and colleges will not be held to account for attendance levels."

Therefore if your child is in the aforementioned three year groups (R, 1 & 6) and unable to attend for whatever reason, could you please let us know at school via e-mail as this will aid with future planning and risk assessing numbers etc.

The Government advice also states that the reopening is just for those three year groups mentioned alongside key workers' children. So unfortunately, other children from Year Groups 2,3,4 & 5, will not to be accepted back at school, even if they are siblings of children who are in Reception, Year 1 and Year 6. For those children not coming into school we will continue to supply work online, as we have previously been doing.

This is of course all provisional at the moment and is based around current advice and it may well change over the next couple of weeks, dependent on evolving national issues. However I feel, moving forward, that it is important that we get ahead of the curve in planning an exit strategy for the lockdown and for getting the children back into school safely. Part of this is giving as much notice as possible to all stakeholders so that risks can be managed and strategies implemented coherently. Therefore, I will endeavour to keep you informed in the process of the reopening of the school every step of the way.

Thank you for all your efforts over the last couple of months and it is great that we are beginning to see the light at the end of the tunnel.

    Best Wishes and keep safe
