  • Grace is a Winner!

    Fri 25 Sep 2015

Grace has won the Derbyshire Schools Sport Association's Primary School Sportsperson of the Year. She received the award at a ceremony in Chesterfield on the evening of Thursday 24th September. We are all extremely proud of her!

This is what it said in the programme:

    Grace Longden (Cycling)   High Peak

Eight-year-old cyclist Grace, from Buxworth Primary School, has raced in a number of British Schools Cycling Association events, achieving first place in the U9 girls’ category in the Yorkshire Regional Hill Climb Championships. She won the U10 girls’ category at British Cycling closed circuit races at Darley Moor and Forge Valley. Grace was the youngest person to complete the 34-mile Grindleford Goat Cycle Ride, and was a member of the Buxworth School Cycle team which won the High Peak area schools cyclo-cross finals.

Our school team (with Grace) went on to win the County Finals, and became County Champions for Cyclo-cross. You can see their trophies on the display in school. In addition to all this, Grace entered the Welsh Duathlon Championships, and came 2nd in the U10 category. She is also a good park runner, completing 5k in 25 minutes.

    Well done, Grace!

What a day! So many parents and children contributed to make this a fantastic day where so much was achieved for the school. The ECO area was cleared to make it easier to use again. The garden is almost ready for planting. Everywhere was pruned and weeded to make it neat and clean around the school. The pencil fence and train were prepared and painted. The windows by Class 4 were cleared of plants then immediately cleaned! The cuttings were cleared away, paths brushed and gates washed down. There is just too much to list. People donated paint, wood varnish and stain, brushes, cakes, time and energy. Parents and children worked incredibly hard and cheerfully. It was so much fun some came for an hour and stayed all day (yes - really!). The children were fantastic. They helped to paint the fence, treated the wood, helped with the train, cleared the pruned branches, fetched and carried, washed everything in sight and were, quite honestly, unbelievably helpful and hard working for hours and hours. When you come to school, have a good look at the results of our hard work, and look for our next SOS day!

See all the photographs in 'Community' on this website of the fantastic day. The children were SO EXCITED and that was just when they saw the police motorbikes blocking the road to the Navigation so that the cyclists could ride through safely! When the first peloton went through the cheers went up. We waved flags and encouraged the riders.  Thanks to the parents who organised the children and their bikes coming to school !  So many!  And thank you very much Carl and Edith for supporting our cyclists and organising the duathlon.  The roadside looked perfect with the fantastic paintings of cyclists done by the children. Did you notice the bicycle in the tree? We were proud to be part of the Tour of Britain.
