Forest Schools Activities

Horse Chestnuts children become Police Officers in ‘How To Catch A Porridge Thief’!

Learning to create wanted posters and to write detailed and accurate instructions in chronological order.

Firefighting past and present
We have been learning about the great fire of London. The children are so knowledgeable on the subject and have produced some fantastic newspaper reports! Perhaps even better than that, and in order to compare past to present, we have been visited by Derbyshire Fire Service. It was a brilliant afternoon, the children learned loads  looking all around the fire engine, which was great for them… and Mr Tupman got to dress as a fireman, which was great for him…

Forest Schools Activities

Winter Festivals ! We have been using our senses to imagine being back at a firework display! We then wrote a senses bonfire poem using lots of amazing adjectives !

In our Science plants topic we have planted two types of plants: dwarf sunflower seeds and white narcissus bulbs. We have predicted and talked about what they need to be able to grow, carried out experiments with varying degrees of water and sunlight allowed and we are now measuring our plants each week to check their growth! The children also discussed the life cycle of a plant and an animal.

The Horse Chestnuts have been super busy recently. They have made their own play dough, sculpted hedgehogs out of them, written fact files about real hedgehogs and then designed and painted their own shown on our display. They are now all hedgehog experts!

Our work from the previous term was so impressive that we have decided to leave it here for your viewing pleasure! We have made hardtack sea biscuits like real pirates. We read and followed the instructions, then wrote our own the next day! We enjoyed listening to our Jolly Rogers and the Ghostly Galleon story whilst eating them! We also evaluated our biscuits, thinking about what we liked, and how we could improve them next time!

Medieval Day! The children role played working as 'Castle Experts' giving guided tours to the year 6s and each other, where they got to show off the castles they'd built and share some background knowledge about 'Edinburgh' and 'Windsor' Castle. They also designed dresses and knights as well as made castles out of playdough and lego. The children then prepared their food for the banquet: kings bread and peasant bread as well as making some 'pottage' stew which a few of them loved and came back for seconds! We then danced and , played games and sang songs and then had our banquet. We finished the day with a story about a Knight!

We have been designing and building castles, talking about kings, queens and royalty and making crowns and shields ready to celebrate The Jubilee!

Class Trip to Peveril Castle. We explored the castle and the surroundings, looked at what a gorge was and learnt who built the castle, how old it is and why it was built on top of a big hill!

The year 2's celebrate as they finish their week of SATs! Well done to all the year 2s, they have worked so hard and really deserve this cookie treat!

History, D+T and English ! In History we have been learning all about a famous fossil hunter; Mary Anning. The children read and followed instructions on how to make a fossil, which they will 'discover' later this week in forest school. They also recalled and wrote facts from memory about Mary Anning, and even role played being fossil hunters - a little bit like the significant work Mary Anning did over 200 years ago.

Moorland Discovery Centre Part 2 - We made a bird feeder and planted a bean !

Horse Chestnut Trip to the Moorland Discovery Centre! We learnt about hibernation and migration, saw badger sets, build a home for a dormouse and did some colour matching on our woodland walk.
