World Book Day 2023!

To celebrate world book day (and as some inspiration for spending the vouchers we’re sending home) the teachers have been reading some of their favorite picture books. Here is ours (check out the other class pages for theirs).
The Gruffalo’s Child - read by Mr T (with added storytelling and acting from Freya)

We will be reading and then writing about these stories this term as part of our Winter Festivals topic as well as bonfire night poems!

The Enchanted Woodland topic will cover these exciting books. Some of which we will read and enjoy in class together, others will be incorporated into their own reading and writing.

This Term we are studying Pirates and will be reading a couple of longer books written by the author Jonny Duddle called ' The Jolly Rogers and the Ghostly Galleon' as well as 'Jolly Rogers and the Monster's Gold'. We will also be focusing on some shorter poetry books such as 'Class 3 all at Sea' and 'Go, Go Pirate Boat!' in our English writing too..

This topic we are reading King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, The Princess and the Pea and the Knight who Wouldn't Fight and Rapunzel!

We are reading a series of traditional tales as well as exploring some of Aesop's Fables this term!

Reading Books

It is very important you hear your child read at least 3 times each week. This is to help with fluency, familiarity and comprehension. They should be able to fluently read at least 80% of what they are reading independently including sounding it out themselves). They need to also be able to answer comprehension questions about the book for example 'why do you think she felt that way?' etc. They should also be able to predict an ending or predicament.

We are using Bug Club Phonics and as part of our scheme we are introducing Bug Club reading books for our children to make their learning as holistic and effective as possible. They will be given one of these books to read for the whole week. The children should be able to recognise and decode  many of the sounds as they will have been taught them previously. They will also be given a 'grapple' (challenge) book and a reading book for pleasure which you can read with them!

Reading is such an integral and essential part of the children's learning process and they will continue to make real progress in all areas if they can develop a passion for reading at an early age.

Please look at our Year 1 and 2 recommended reads so far this year to give you some more ideas!

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S Lewis. Our Year 1 and 2s have been reading the abridged version. They have acted it out, designed, painted and walked through their own magical wardrobe and written their own versions ! Well done Horse Chestnuts!
