Welcome to Autumn Term 1.  Our Topic this term is The Enchanted Woodland. We will be using texts and wonderful stories to help fuel our ideas and imaginations to help us write about and create our own enchanted woodlands. We will use our local woodland areas to learn about the plants and animals that live there and develop a deeper understanding of their habitats and needs. We will be learning geographical skills, using maps and keys, to make our own enchanted woodland maps that open up into magical areas. In Art we will be making tree bogart art and our own magical fairy jars. To help us learn about the local wildlife and that from further afield we will be having a class trip to The Peak Wildlife Centre on Wednesday 14^th October and we will celebrate all of our wonderful learning by having an Enchanted Woodland Tea Party on Wednesday the 21^stOctober in the afternoon. Tea party clothes can be sent in to change into for the afternoon.

In English we will be improving our sentence writing to include simple punctuation as a standard and extend it to using commas to add more information. We will be learning and using lots of new vocabulary to make the text come alive. We will be writing different text types including stories, instructions and fact files. In Phonics the Year 1s will be learning Phase 5 which is alternative ways to make already known sounds. The Year 2 children will be working on suffixes, prefixes and spelling patterns.

We will use our daily phonics lessons to help us to read and write. Cursive handwriting will be a daily focus.

In Maths, the Year 1 children will be counting, recognising and comparing numbers within 10, counting to 20, counting in 10s.Recognising patterns and comparing quantities. Y2: Composition of multiples to 10, counting and representing numbers 20-99, comparing, ordering and partitioning 2digit numbers, addition and subtraction facts with numbers within numbers to 10 and 20.

Other Business

Miss Nelson will be teaching the class on a Monday and Tuesday and Miss Crombleholme on a Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Miss Fay and Mrs Povey will support. 

 Forest School will be on a Monday afternoon this term. Please dress your child appropriately for the weather and the outdoor environment. Even in warm weather long sleeves and trousers are preferred due to risk of scratches or cuts. P.E will be Tuesday afternoon and Friday afternoon for 45minute sessions. After Christmas Tuesday P.E will become swimming lessons.

PLEASE TRY AND LISTEN TO YOUR CHILD READ AT LEAST 4 TIMES A WEEK. We will change the books when you have indicated they have been heard read their school book, which will be closely matched to their phonics, multiple times at home. Please record this in their dairies. The current advice is for children to re-read the same text multiple times and that they be 80% fluent before it is changed. This helps with their fluency and confidence.
